DIY Self-File

DIY Instructions

If you want to file independently, this guide walks you through the common steps. For help, choose full-service.

DIY: Unclaimed Funds
  1. Search your state’s unclaimed property website (state treasury / unclaimed property division).
  2. Confirm the listing details (name variations, previous addresses, businesses, etc.).
  3. Gather documents: government ID, proof of address, and any supporting paperwork required.
  4. Submit the claim through the official state portal and save confirmations.
  5. Follow up using the portal status tools and keep copies of all uploads.
Tip: Search multiple states if you moved often or had prior addresses.
DIY: Surplus Funds
  1. Identify the county clerk/sheriff/tax office handling surplus proceeds for the sale.
  2. Confirm eligibility (owner, lienholder, heirs/estate, etc.).
  3. Request the official claim packet/forms and deadline details.
  4. Prepare required documents (ID, deeds, probate/estate docs, assignments where applicable).
  5. Submit the packet and request a receipt or case reference number.
Surplus timelines can be strict. Don’t wait.
